Witcher 3 Remastered Cross-Platform Mods on mod.io

Delayed from 2025 into 2026, shipping with Remastered — link a mod.io account, then use the in-game menu.

Mods

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches September 29, 2026 with cross-platform mod support. That line used to live on a 2025 calendar. CD PROJEKT RED slipped the work into 2026 and will ship it with the remaster client instead of as a later experimental toggle. Existing owners receive the remaster as a free upgrade; the mod menu is part of that client, not a paid add-on you buy after Toussaint.

This page is the account-and-platform brief. It is not a catalogue of every hair replacer on the internet, and it will not list Nexus IDs as if they were console SKUs. For the upgrade click-path, use How to Upgrade. For which store owns the save, use Platforms. For the rest of the September feature list, use What’s New. The parent index is the Tools Hub.

Who actually gets mods

CDPR has named PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series for the mod.io lane. Custom quests, items, and balance changes — the pitch on the remaster list — stop being a PC-only habit on those boxes. Nintendo Switch 2 is part of the remaster console rollout in press materials. That is a client fact. It is not a promise that every mod.io listing is a handheld download. Do not assume a Switch 2 Nexus mirror. Do not assume a PS5 listing installs on Steam because the filename looks familiar.

The campaign remains a single-player RPG with or without mods. A quest pack does not turn the inn into a lobby.

Accounts: mod.io linked to CDPR

The official distribution layer is mod.io. You need a mod.io account linked to a CD PROJEKT RED account before the in-game menu will treat you as a person instead of a guest staring at a locked list. Do that in a browser before September 29 if you can. Launch-morning account linking behind a griffin fight is how people decide “mods are broken.”

Steps that will not change just because the lighting did:

  1. Create or log into a CDPR account (the same family of login the GOG / CDPR network already uses).
  2. Create or log into mod.io.
  3. Link the two in the official flow CDPR publishes with the client.
  4. Open the in-game mod menu after Remastered is installed, not a random zip on the desktop.

If a guide tells you to drag files into mods\ on a PlayStation, close it. Console installs go through the menu. PC can still be messier — see Nexus below — but the supported cross-platform path is the in-game list talking to mod.io.

Nexus still works on PC

Nexus Mods does not vanish because mod.io arrived. On PC, the classic folder-and-manager habit still works for a huge library of 2015–2025 packages. Script merge tools, load-order managers, and REDkit projects you already use do not become illegal overnight.

They also do not become console mods. Not every PC mod will be on consoles. Texture packs that rewrite half the install, script hooks that need a desktop injector, and anything that assumes a loose x64 folder are PC creatures. If you want a friend on Xbox Series to run the same quest, the author has to ship a build that survives the mod.io console pipeline.

REDkit mods have the best chance. REDkit is CDPR’s official toolkit. Quests, items, and encounters built there are the ones console certification can reason about. A 2016 “replace every NPC face” pack that never saw REDkit is a PC souvenir. Read the author’s platform tags. If the tag says PC only, believe it.

What to install on day one (and what not to)

Useful first-week instincts:

  • One cosmetic, one quality-of-life, zero overhaul stacks. The remaster already rewrites combat, the skill tree, looting, and the UI. Piling a 2022 combat overhaul on top of Yigsoft’s pass is how you file a bug that is actually a mod conflict.
  • Prefer mods updated for the Remastered / next-gen client. A 2015 script that never met DirectX 12 is not a personality.
  • Treat “balance” mods as a second difficulty slider. Death March plus a monster-stat pack is a choice; it is not the shipped game. Keep a clean save.
  • Quest mods are the headline for consoles. Play them after White Orchard, not instead of Devil by the Well. The White Orchard Walkthrough still applies.
  • Transmog and photo mode already cover a lot of “I want Geralt to look like this” intent. See Transmog and Photo Mode before you install a fourth outfit framework.

Hardware still matters. Mods that add high-resolution textures are a VRAM conversation. If the tower is at the minimum line, read System Requirements and Graphics Settings before you subscribe to a 4K foliage pack. Path tracing plus a texture overhaul is two hobbies; pick one on night one.

Safety, stores, and the free-upgrade fact

Mods are optional. The remaster runs without them. Disable the menu, play the campaign, finish Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine (owners gained both at no extra cost on August 25, 2026), and come back. Songs of the Past in 2027 is a paid expansion; it is not a mod. Do not wait in a mod.io queue for Letten. Wishlist the expansion on a store that will sell it — Songs of the Past — and keep your save on that store.

A few store facts people mix up:

  • The free upgrade is the Remastered client, including the official mod menu, for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. Battle.net is a debut store for people who buy there. Claim steps: How to Upgrade.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere moves saves in the Xbox lane. It does not magically copy a Steam Nexus load order onto a Series X.
  • Official channels and account pages sit on Official Links. Use those URLs for CDPR login trouble, not a comment-section redirect.

If a mod claims to add a second playable witcher, online sessions, or a Ciri open world, that is community fiction sitting on top of a single-player Geralt campaign. The shipped roster is still Geralt in the field and Ciri in authored sequences.

Link the accounts this week, not during the title-screen choir. When September 29 lands, open the in-game mod menu once, subscribe to nothing, confirm the list loads, then go hunt. A working empty menu is the win. Filling it is optional, and filling it with a decade of PC-only zips is how a free upgrade becomes a load-order night. Leave Nexus on the desktop PC. Leave REDkit-tagged quests for the living-room box. Leave Switch 2 out of any sentence that assumes a full Nexus catalogue. The Continent is large enough without a broken script in White Orchard.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the Remastered upgrade, builds, and story.

Which platforms get official Witcher 3 mods?

PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series via mod.io, shipping with Remastered on September 29, 2026. Switch 2 is part of the remaster console rollout; do not assume a full Nexus-style catalogue on that handheld.

Do I need a special account?

Yes. Create a mod.io account and link it to a CD PROJEKT RED account, then use the in-game mod menu. Do the link before launch day if you can.

Does Nexus Mods still work?

On PC, yes. Nexus and classic load-order tools still work for desktop installs. They are not the console pipeline. Not every PC mod will be on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series.

Which mods have the best chance on consoles?

REDkit projects — official-toolkit quests, items, and encounters. Loose texture dumps and injector scripts are PC-only habits. Read the author's platform tags.

Is mod support a paid DLC?

No. Existing owners get Remastered as a free upgrade, and the official mod menu is part of that client. Songs of the Past in 2027 is a separate paid expansion, not a mod pack.

Should I install a combat overhaul on day one?

No. Remastered already rewrites combat, the skill tree, and the UI. Start with an empty menu, then add one cosmetic or one REDkit quest. See What's New for the shipped pass.
