Witcher 3 Remastered Signs, Oils, and Alchemy

Aard, Igni, Yrden, Quen, Axii, toxicity, decoctions, and why Death March still punishes an empty pouch.

Signs and Alchemy

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches September 29, 2026 with new Signs FX, a skill tree revamp, and enhanced monster behaviors. None of that retires the five Signs or the alchemy bag. Geralt is a witcher: he prepares. This page is the preparation layer that the Combat Guide assumes you already did. Button layout for instant casts is on Controls. White Orchard practice fights — the well and the griffin — are on the White Orchard Walkthrough.

If you skipped alchemy in 2015 on Story and Sword, you could fake it with Quen and food. On Blood and Broken Bones, and especially on Death March, that fake expires in White Orchard.

The five Signs

Aard is a telekinetic blast. Use it to stagger, to knock a foe down for a heavy attack, to break weak doors, and to clear a gas or fog the bestiary mentions. Far-Reaching Aard is the upgrade for distance. The remaster’s new Signs FX make the cone easier to read; they do not widen it by themselves. Spend a skill point if you already use the blast. Skip it if you only press Igni.

Igni is fire. It is the farm-tool Sign: wolves, drowners, humans, and anything the book calls flammable. Firestream (the hold mode) is for melting a single target, not for a griffin dive. Do not open every fight with Igni out of habit — wraiths laugh at it, and you just spent stamina you needed for a dodge.

Yrden is the trap circle. Wraiths, noonwraiths, and nightwraiths are the reason it exists. Devil by the Well is the tutorial the game already wrote; if you skipped it, you do not understand Yrden. Magic Trap upgrades and the slow effect on living enemies are bonuses. The circle on a specter is the job.

Quen is the shield. Cast it before the yellow combat ring, recast when the new shatter FX plays, and treat a broken Quen as “dodge now,” not “one more light attack.” Active Shield (hold) absorbs and can return stamina on some builds; it is a playstyle, not the default. On Death March, a Geralt with no Quen is a speedrun to the load screen.

Axii is hypnosis. In combat it stuns one target so you can cut the pack down. In dialogue it is the witcher-sign check that avoids a sword fight or a bribe. Puppet and Delusion are the usual skill-tree picks; if both are active, watch for the old alternate-mode conflict and prefer the upgrade you actually use. Axii is how Geralt talks like a professional instead of a bandit.

Places of Power still grant a first-time ability point and a Sign bonus. Draw them in White Orchard before you invent a theory about being “underleveled.” Spending those points is a Skill Tree problem; having them is a walking problem.

Toxicity is the real mana bar

Potions, decoctions, and some bombs push a toxicity meter. Cross the threshold and Geralt starts dying from his own medicine. That is not flavor. Rules that still apply:

  • Swallow is the heal-over-time potion. Drink it at the start of a fight you expect to take hits, not after the silver sword is already red.
  • Thunderbolt raises damage. Tawny Owl raises stamina regen. Blizzard is for slow-motion precision. Cat is for caves. White Raffard’s Decoction is an emergency chunk of health (and a lot of toxicity).
  • You refill potions by meditating with alcohol in the inventory. Immersive meditation is a remaster presentation pass on that wait. It does not refill empty bottles if you have no alcohol.
  • Superior versions, once you find the recipes, hit harder and last longer. They still add toxicity. Do not drink four superior potions because the UI looks pretty after the looting rework.

Acquired Tolerance and related alchemy skills raise the cap. That is why alchemy builds scale; it is also why a fresh White Orchard save cannot copy a Toussaint bar. See Best Builds when you are ready to commit points. Until then, two potions per fight is a grown-up limit.

Oils: one blade, one monster type

Oils are applied to the active sword and last a fixed number of hits. Match the bestiary:

  • Griffin oil for the White Orchard griffin.
  • Specter oil for the noonwraith at the well.
  • Necrophage oil for drowners and ghouls.
  • Beast oil for wolves and dogs.
  • Hanged Man’s Venom for humans.
  • Insectoid, hybrid, draconid, ogroid, cursed, vampire, relict, and the rest as the book adds them.

Apply before the fight. The remaster’s enhanced monster behaviors are a reason to oil, not a reason to skip. A griffin that dives more aggressively is still a griffin. If you are swapping steel and silver, oil both or accept that the human bandits after the nest will eat an uncoated steel blade.

Bombs are the third column: Grapeshot for groups, Samum for stun and nest destruction, Dancing Star for fire, Devil’s Puffball for poison, Moon Dust for specters that phase. You do not need all of them in hour one. You need Samum and one damage bomb, plus the oil that matches the contract.

Decoctions and the long buff

Decoctions are mutagen drinks with high toxicity and long duration. They are not White Orchard toys; they become central once you have mutagens from serious hunts. Water Hag (damage when at full health), Ekhidna (stamina on damage dealt), Troll (health regen), and Griffin (damage reduction after a Sign) are the names people build around. Drink one decoction plus Swallow, not three decoctions plus Raffard, unless your Skill Tree is an alchemy tree with the cap to match.

The remaster does not advertise a new decoction list. It does advertise enhanced monster behaviors and a skill tree revamp, which makes a decoction you already understand more valuable, not less. If a decoction’s tooltip and the tree disagree after September 29, trust the in-game tooltip and keep a note; do not copy a 2016 spreadsheet blindly.

Gourmet food (Blood and Wine perk)

Base-game owners gained access to Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no extra cost on August 25, 2026. Gourmet is a Blood and Wine ability: food healing lasts a long real-time duration (the famous 20-minute snack). You will not have it while you are still in White Orchard on a new save. Do not skip food in the opening region because a wiki tab said Gourmet exists. Eat during the griffin. Later, when you reach the Blood and Wine content and can buy the perk, Gourmet turns inventory meat into a set-and-forget heal and lets alchemy potions handle the burst. That is a Toussaint luxury. White Orchard is sandwiches and Swallow.

Why alchemy is not optional on Death March

Death March cuts the margin until Geralt’s preparation is the margin. Quen breaks in one or two hits. Food is slow. A griffin dive without Swallow and oil is a reload. Enhanced combat, new finishers, and prettier Igni do not change that math; they make the punish more obvious on camera. If you want Death March for the badge, you are signing up for:

  • Bestiary first, sword second.
  • Oils on the correct metal.
  • Swallow at the open, not at 10% health.
  • Yrden for specters every time, not when you “feel like mixing it up.”
  • Meditation with alcohol after every serious fight.
  • Knowing your toxicity before you drink Thunderbolt.

Story and Sword players can treat this page as extra credit. Death March players who skip it will bounce off White Orchard and then ask whether the remaster “broke” the griffin. It did not. The bird always wanted you to prepare.

For assembled Sign-heavy or alchemy-heavy loadouts, use the Builds Hub and Best Builds. For how those trees changed, use the Skill Tree and What’s New. Then go back to the well with Yrden on a quick-cast key. The noonwraith is still the best alchemy teacher in the game, and she is still only a few hundred meters from the inn.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the Remastered upgrade, builds, and story.

Which Sign should I upgrade first?

Quen if you take hits, Yrden if wraiths bother you, Igni if you already cast it in every pack. Draw White Orchard Places of Power first so the point exists. Tree structure is on the Skill Tree.

How does toxicity work?

Potions and decoctions fill a meter. Over the cap, Geralt takes damage from the mixture. Swallow plus one offensive potion is a safe White Orchard pair. Meditate with alcohol to refill.

Are decoctions worth using?

Yes once you have mutagens and a higher toxicity cap. They are long buffs, not panic heals. Combine one decoction with Swallow rather than stacking three. Loadouts sit on Best Builds.

What is Gourmet?

A Blood and Wine perk that makes food healing last a long real-time stretch. Base-game owners gained the expansions on August 25, 2026, but Gourmet is not a White Orchard pickup. Eat normally until you can buy the perk.

Why is alchemy required on Death March?

Damage taken outpaces food and a single Quen cast. Oils, Swallow, and the correct Sign are the margin. New finishers and Signs FX in the remaster do not replace preparation. Practice on Devil by the Well in the White Orchard Walkthrough.

How do I cast Signs faster in a fight?

Enable Quick Sign Casting in Gameplay options so keys 3–7 or controller face buttons fire immediately. Setup is on Controls. Standard radial casting still exists if you want the slow-down wheel.
