Witcher 3 Remastered Getting Started in White Orchard
Set difficulty, save slots, and Signs before the griffin — then decide when the opening region is actually finished.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches September 29, 2026. Whether you claimed the free upgrade or bought the game for the first time on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2, the opening hours still decide whether combat feels like a dance or a stamina drain. This page is the first-session checklist. Store steps live in How to Upgrade. Button maps live in Controls. Quest order for the mill, the well, and the garrison lives in the White Orchard Walkthrough.
Tutorial modernization is on the remaster feature list. Treat it as a better explanation of the new camera, targeting, and Sign FX — not as a replacement for routing Places of Power or packing Swallow before a griffin dive.
Pick a difficulty and leave it alone
The four settings are unchanged in name: Just the Story, Story and Sword, Blood and Broken Bones, and Death March. Just the Story is for players who want conversations, Gwent, and exploration without parry windows. Story and Sword is the honest first playthrough: enemies hit, oils matter, but a missed roll is not a reload. Blood and Broken Bones is the setting that teaches you to drink Swallow before the fight, not during it. Death March punishes empty alchemy pouches and late Quen; read Signs and Alchemy before you commit to it.
You can lower difficulty later. Raising it mid-run after you have already spent ability points on a soft tree is how people decide the remaster “broke combat.” Set the slider once, then learn the Combat Guide on that slider.
The first two hours, in order
After the Kaer Morhen prologue you wake in White Orchard with Vesemir. Ride to the inn, sit through the local politics, and open the pause menu before you accept a contract.
- Confirm camera distance for exploration, combat, and horseback. The remaster’s dynamic combat camera is a response to the next-gen close view that hid groups of drowners; start on Default for fights if you are new.
- Turn on Quick Sign Casting if you are on a controller or want keys 3–7 to fire Signs immediately. Details are on Controls.
- Create at least three manual save slots. Name one “pre-contract,” one “pre-griffin,” and leave one rotating.
- Take the notice-board contracts, then talk to the Nilfgaardian garrison about the griffin so the investigation markers actually appear.
- Draw from every Place of Power you pass. Each unused stone is an ability point you will not get by grinding wolves.
- Do Devil by the Well before the griffin if you have never used Yrden on a wraith. The noonwraith is a better teacher than a dive-bombing hybrid.
- Cook or buy food, keep a Swallow, and put Griffin oil on silver before you climb the nest hill.
Do not sprint every question mark on the map in hour one. Abandoned sites teach loot value; they also eat repair kits you will want after the griffin. If you came from a 2015 muscle memory of “clear the whole region first,” still clear Places of Power and the Viper diagrams — skip random bandit camps until your weight bar is not red.
Save habits that survive a crash
Autosaves exist. They also overwrite at the worst inn doorway. Manual-save before you meditate to pass time, before you start a contract boss, and before you enter the Vizima cutscene chain that ends the White Orchard story beat. Keep backups of the save folder on PC; CD PROJEKT RED has not published a full save-migration whitepaper for the remaster, so do not treat cloud sync as a museum archive. If you are moving from the classic build, read the caution notes on How to Upgrade and keep a copy dated before September 29.
Meditation is still how you refill potions (with alcohol in the inventory) and pass time. Immersive meditation is a remaster presentation pass, not a new resource system. Use it; do not skip it because the animation is longer.
Inventory, weight, and what not to sell
Geralt has a carry cap. Armor, swords, monster trophies, and “might be useful” junk fill it before you reach the mill. Priorities:
- Keep crafting components, mutagens, monster parts, and alcohol. Merchants will buy your extra swords; they will not replace a drowned-dead tongue when you need oil.
- Repair kits are cheaper than a broken silver sword in a griffin’s face.
- Food stacks. On a first run, buy cheap meat and water. If you own Blood and Wine content (base-game owners gained access on August 25, 2026), the Gourmet perk later makes a single meal last a long real-time stretch — you will not have that perk in White Orchard, so snack during fights.
- Steel versus silver is not flavor text. Humans, wolves, and dogs take steel. Wraiths, griffins, and noonwraiths take silver. Swap before you commit the first heavy attack, not after the health bar surprises you.
- Saddlebags on Roach raise capacity. Buy them when florens allow; revamped mount handling makes the horse less of a slapstick sketch, but Roach still is not a perfect charger.
Looting rework and UI improvements should make comparison less painful than the 2015 inventory. They do not raise the cap. If the bag is red, dump vendor trash at the inn merchant before you dive for river herbs.
Places of Power before the road to Vizima
White Orchard hides multiple Places of Power: north of the mill across the water, in the marsh west of the abandoned village, in the woods south of the inn, near the Nilfgaardian garrison, and along the eastern road toward the river crossing. Draw from each once. The Sign each stone boosts is a bonus; the ability point is the reason you detour. Spend early points in a way that matches how you actually fight — a Quen point if you eat hits, an Igni point if you already hold the cast button, an Axii point if you want cheaper dialogue checks. Full trees and remaster restructuring are on the Skill Tree page and the Builds Hub.
Do not leave the region with unused stones because “I will come back.” You can return to White Orchard after the Vizima sequence, but the cheapest ability points in the game are the ones next to the griffin nest you already climbed.
When to leave White Orchard
Leave when the story asks you to follow the Nilfgaardian lead toward Vizima and you have done the following:
- Devil by the Well, so Yrden is not a theory.
- The griffin contract, so you have seen a real monster fight under remaster targeting.
- At least one pass through the garrison, including the Viper steel diagram if you care about early Witcher gear.
- Every Place of Power you can reach without fighting a level+6 question mark for sport.
You do not need every treasure chest. You do need a sense of dodge, roll, Quen, and oil. If combat still feels like you are sliding past hitboxes, stay and fight drowners at the river with the Combat Guide open; the Vizima road will not teach those habits for you.
Hardware can also decide the first two hours. Windows 11 64-bit, an SSD, and DirectX 12 are required for the remaster PC build. Minimum is an i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 12 GB RAM, and a GTX 1660 6GB / RX 5500 XT 8GB / Arc A580, with 70 GB on SSD. If the mill hitching is the GPU, check System Requirements and Graphics Settings before you blame the new monster behaviors. Players who miss the spec can stay on or revert to the classic build on Steam or GOG.
For who Geralt is, why Ciri is the search, and how the roster fits the plot without later-act spoilers, use Characters and Geralt. For what actually changed in the September 29 package, skim What’s New. Then go hunt — the well is west, the griffin is south, and the unused Place of Power you skipped is the one you will want during the first Velen contract.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about the Remastered upgrade, builds, and story.
Which difficulty should a new player pick?
Story and Sword for a first Continent run. Use Blood and Broken Bones if you already know Quen and oils. Save Death March until you have read Signs and Alchemy. Just the Story is fine if you only want the search for Ciri.
When should I leave White Orchard?
After Devil by the Well, the griffin contract, the garrison stop, and the Places of Power you can reach. The White Orchard Walkthrough lists that order without spoiling later acts.
Do Places of Power still give ability points?
Yes. Each stone grants a point the first time you draw from it. White Orchard has several; skipping them is the slowest way to start the Skill Tree.
Is one autoslot enough?
No. Keep multiple named manual saves, especially before contracts and before the Vizima sequence. CD PROJEKT RED has not published a full remaster save-migration whitepaper; keep folder backups on PC as noted in How to Upgrade.
Will the remaster tutorial replace this guide?
No. Tutorial modernization should explain new camera, targeting, and Sign FX. It will not route Viper diagrams, inventory trash, or the decision to leave the mill. Use Controls for the option that makes Signs fire without the radial menu.
